Kitchen Knife Review

Where Can I Buy Steak Knives

If you are in the market for some new steak knives this Christmas - either for your good self, or if you are looking to buy that special someone a new set, then you might be thinking about the best place to buy steak knives.

Well, it may not come as a surprise - given that this is a website online, that the online stores offer - by far - some of the best prices when it comes to kitchen cutlery and implements. The problem that many high street stores face is that they simply can’t carry enough stock of different types of steak knives to offer you a good selection. It’s often not because they can’t afford it, but it’s more often that they literally do not have sufficient space to keep them all!

One good place to start is Google Products who allow you to search for different products (surprise surprise) and rank them by review and price. The only problem with this, however, is that you are then redirected to that merchant’s website, and eCommerce seems to be one of those things that some people just don’t get right, and do you really want to hand over your credit card details to yet another online retailer? Probably not.

Amazon on the other hand, are a very well established retailer online, and to be honest, you probably already have an account with them, or if you don’t, then you might seriously want to look into it! Not only do they offer a little more peace of mind with your personal information, but they stock such a huge range of steak knives that if you can’t find it there, it probably doesn’t exist!

In addition to this, they allow other stores - and people - to sell their wares through Amazon, so if they do not stock it themselves, you can be confident that someone on there will. They also have one of the most established supply chain networks, so you can probably get your shiny new steak knives within forty-eight hours.

So, if you are looking to buy some new steak knives - head on over to Amazon.

In the run up to Christmas, there are a good few of us looking to steak knivest for a great gift for a family member or friend. I personally am looking at getting a new set of them for Christmas, so have been doing quite a lot of research (knowledge is power!) to try and find the best steak knives for my budget.

From looking around on Amazon, you can spend upwards of $250 on a set of 6 knives, but is a litle bit high for my budget - althought they do look really good! Much like kitchen knives, it is better to focus on quality rather than driving for the best price - there is always a balance to be reached between price and quality, but it can sometimes be hard to get it right.

The Best Steak Knives

So, without further ado, I present a list of the top 5 steak knives around at the moment - you can click on the title or image to go through to find out more information and to buy.

Overall, there are some great steak knives above. If you have the money, I would go for the Laguiole or Wusthof knives just because they have good heritage behind them and will not disapoint. I haven't mentioned any JA Heckles Steak Knives here, but I will save that for another day!

Laguiole Verdier Multicolor Steak Knives in Block
</td>

Laguiole Multicolored Steak Knife Set

I didn't really want to start this list with a set of Laguiole steak knives, as they tend to be quite a bit more expensive than you need for a good cut. However, these acrylic handled set are considerably more affordable than their wooden handled versions.

Laguiole have been making steak knives for longer than I have been around, and they are the absolute peak of stylish knife if you are having a meal which requires them. A thoroughly good set of knives, and great overall presentation - and it doesn't break the bank.

Chicago Cutlery 4-Piece Steak Knife Set

Chicago Cutlery 4 Piece Steak Knife Set

Chicago Cutlery is a US firm that has been making great kitchen and dining ware for some years now, and their products offer a great balance on old school industrial design and ergonomics that just works.

These are very much heavy duty steak knives that will get you through the most demanding of cuts, and for that reason I would tend to recommend these for the more regular steak eater. The blades here are - unusually for a steak knife - not serrated, so be careful of whatever you are cutting on that you do not damage the surface.

Overall a very strong set of knives that are pretty utalitarian.

Dexter-Russell Steak Knife Set, 6 piece, w/ Wood Block

Dexter Russell Steak Knife Set

Whilst we don't all need 6 steak knives (although it can't hurt), this set of 6 four-inch rosewood handled steak knives have a very traditional, old style bistro feel to them, and they are a real pleasure to use and eat with. They bring back feelings of being tucked up in a great Parisian bistro and tucking into some entrecote on a wet windy evening.

The knives come in a wooden block which is great for presentation, but will also keep the steak knives protected from the rough and tumble of being left out in a drawer on their own.

Whilst these are not the most iconic looking knives here for modern days, they should be considered timeless classics!

Victorinox Forged 4-Piece Serrated Steak Knife Set

Victorinox Forged Serrated Steak Knife Set

For those of you who don't know, Victornix are famous for the original swiss army knife and have been making quality cutlery and knives for nearly 200 years.

These steak knives combine a balance of traditional serrated knife blades with a more modern finish with the moulded plastic handles brining in a bit of modern day engineering practice. Whilst they can look pretty sinister, these knives are certain to impress if you are hosting a dinner party, and the full-tang scalloped blades will ensure that they can get through the most stubborn of meat cuts!

Great knives and for a great price - I think I will get a set of these myself for Christmas.

Wusthof Classic Ikon 4 pc. Steak Knife Set

Wusthof Classic Ikon Steak Knife Set

It would not be right to finish these top 5 steak knives list without a mention of the german powerhouse, Wusthof. This set of 4 "Classic Ikon" steak knives are truly beautiful to look at, and with Wusthof's reputation for producing amazing quality kitchen knives and blades, you can be sure that these are going to last you a good long time.

The blades on these steak knifes are not serrated, and are also particularly sharp, so you will need to be careful with the plate or whatever surface it is you are cutting on, because it's not just the steak they will cut through.

Top 5 Kitchen Knife Tips

Chances are that a good few people will be on the lucky end of some new kitchen knives this Christmas, and as a result they will be quickly unboxing them and perhaps even putting them to good use when it comes to carving up a bit of turkey on the big day.

However, for those people who have not used or owned good quality kitchen knives before, a few basic maintenance tips tend to slip through the gaps in the excitement. Good quality knife sets come with pretty good instructions as to how to maintain your implements, but I thought it would be worth spending a bit of time here underlining the top 5 kitchen knife maintenance tips.

1. Don’t be lazy - avoid the dishwasher

Putting your brand new, top quality kitchen knives in the dishwasher is almost a cardinal sin. Whilst perhaps the build quality of knives has improved since the dawn of dishwashers, in my eyes no good can come of it. By doing so, you put the blades and handles in excessively hot water for no real reason, and the more stubborn - dried on food stuffs are unlikely to come off cleanly.

Also, the salts and other chemicals in the dishwasher tablets will actually stain the blades of your knives, leaving them in sub optimal condition.

If I need to say anymore to convince you not to do this, then I’d say that your kitchen knives deserve better treatment than this. They are probably the most expensive utility in your kitchen, so make sure they continue to do their job by looking after them!

2. Sharpen little but sharpen often

This is one of those tips that frequently slip people by because they think they should stand around like celebrity chefs sharpening their kitchen knives against steels for hours at a time. You should only really be sharpening you knives for a few seconds at a time - such as just before you are about to prepare a meal.

Excessive sharpening leads to the steel getting worn down more quickly than it should, and chances are you do not get the perfect angle so the process actually blunts the knife instead of sharpening it.

3. Proper storage is key

If, like me, you got a set of three or four kitchen knives in a packet, and nothing to store them in, you must make it a priority to go out and get something suitable to leave the knives in.

Do not be tempted to leave them in a drawer with other implements - or even just on their own. The opening and closing of the drawer will lead to the blades clanging against other utensils which has a dulling affect on the blades.

Instead, invest a little money in a good knife block or magnetic rack (I prefer a wooden block myself) - you don’t have to spend much, just get something to protect your new knives.

4. Use the right tool for the job

One of the luxuries of owning a few different styles of kitchen knife is that you can choose the right tool for the job, and you don’t have to try and dice a garlic with a meat cleaver and you don’t have to cut through a chicken bone with a vegetable peeler.

If you are outright cutting and chopping (as opposed to slicing or barelling), you can use a general rule that what you’re cutting should scale with the size of the knife you are using. Obviously you can be dicing up something very small with a big knife, but do not try and julien carrots with a large chef’s knife. The margin for error is too great, and given how sharp these things can be, it is ultimately not going to end well for you.

5. Keep them stowed away

This ties into point 1, 2 and 3 above. If you have just washed up your knives, or finished using them as you are about to eat, make sure they are all accounted for and in a safe place. Obviously you do not have to wash them up straight away, but it is worth making sure they are all in one place and out of harms way.

You can often end up with razor sharp paring knives tucked under some potato peelings, or a chef’s knife hanging perilously close to the edge of a worktop. The few moments it takes to gather the knives together is well worth it, and will ensure you avoid any potential mishaps.

So there we have it, my top 5 kitchen knife tips. If you are lucky enough to get a brand spanking new set of knives this Christmas - do take care with them, but above all else, happy cooking and bon appetit!

What Constitutes The Best Kitchen Knife

Many people are in the dark about what constitutes the best kitchen knife, and as a result end up buying something that is really not suitable or something that is more generic and poorly built from a supermarket or other discount store. Whilst it is not a specific science - selecting a good kitchen knife - it does have a few points to bear in mind whilst you are researching your next kitchen purchase.

Fitness for purpose of your kitchen knife

The first thing to consider is the fitness for purpose of the kitchen knife you are trying to find or looking to buy is whether or not it will meet your needs? There is no point buying a meat cleaver if you spend most of your time barelling vegetables, and conversely, there is no point buying a paring knife if you enjoy slicing up potatoes to make gratin or daupanause. Remember that if you are spending a good bit of money on this purchase, the best kitchen knives will last for years to come - so in a way, once you have bought your knife, you are kind of stuck with it!

Beware the cheap knives

Whilst many of us will be drawn towards the cheaper price tags of some of the poorer quality kitchen knives, this is very definitely a mistake to be aware of. I have personally used a set of “el cheapo” kitchen knives and have nearly cut a finger off because they flex so much when you try and put any significant amount of pressure on them. Also, I have been in situations where I have seen cheap kitchen knives snap off at the tip of the blade. You would probably be okay to take this back to the store, but it is better not to risk losing a finger, because they can’t be replaced too easily.

Don’t aim too high

It is possible to spend up to USD $200 just for one kitchen knife. Personally, I have never done this and do not imagine I ever well, so it is hard to comment as to whether or not these are worth the money. My instinct is that whilst they will be very, very capable and some of the best kitchen knives in the world, they are not sufficiently better than other high end but more affordable knives.

If you go into any cookware shop and look at their kitchen knife selections, you will see they have some comparatively well priced Hanckel and Wusthorf knives. They will also have some more affordable Kitchen Devil knives tucked away - but probably not in the display cabinet. In the glass display cabinet there will also be some Japanese imported knives that you have never heard of, and with a price tag so astronomical it makes your stomach turn. Well, the good news is that you do not need any - or even one - of these knives to do a good job in the kitchen.

You can pick up a set of three Global or Henckel knives for the same price as one of these more expensive, rare chef’s knives. So don’t get too worried about the price discrepancy - these are the Ferraris of the kitchen knife world

Concluding the hunt for the best kitchen knife

Remember - it doesn’t matter that you are not looking at the most expensive knife on the shelf, but at the same time keep any eye out for those knife sets that try and sell you 18 blades for $20 - they are cheap and nasty, and are really not worth the money because you will be replacing them soon enough.

Good luck in your search, and remember that the shops don’t often have the best price - it is worth taking a look at Amazon US or Amazon UK before jumping in.

Buying The Best Kitchen Knife Possible

If, like many people, you are looking to get some new kitchen knives for either yourself or a friend or family member this Christmas, you may be wondering where to start and how to proceed with tracking down the most suitable and, therefore, the best kitchen knife for your needs.

It is probably a bit of an understatement to say that there a thousands of different kitchen knives out there on the market, and it is a literal minefield when it comes to buying a few new knives or even a knife set - one false move, and your kitchen knife and cooking dreams could be toast.

However, it does not need to be that hard if you bear a few important things in mind when you are shopping around. You must make sure you do not get persuaded by supermarket and local store offers when they try and sell you generic kitchen knives without a proper brand. Yes, these may be cheap, but they are FAR from the best kitchen knives.

Here are a few tips to bear in mind when shopping around or online:

  • Many reviews you read will be written by people who take kitchen knives a little bit too seriously. We love them here, and think there is a great beauty in them, but we recognize that they are just tools to get a job done.

  • It is a market place, and product, where price does actually reflect quality and reliability. Generally, and up to a certain point, the more money you are able to spend on a kitchen knife, the chances are the better it will be.

  • That said, there are many very excellent knife forgers and manufacturers who just make really good quality knives - have done for ages and will continue to do so. Some of these makers do good prices that do not seem as scary, and above a certain point you will just be paying for a brand or stying.

  • You really want to avoid cheap generic imports - especially if you are buying a gift for someone else. They are just rubbish bits of plastic or wood attached to a poorly formed stainless steel knife and blade - they will be blunt within a month, and the steel is not folded properly so you can not sharpen it as you would need to.

  • Cheaper kitchen knives are not only far from the best, but they tend to break within a year (snapping blades, handles fall off) rendering them totally useful, so once you have done with it in that time, you will need to head back to the shops to pick up some more.

  • Spending a little bit more money on your purchase ensures that this will not happen, and you end up with a great set of knives that will easily last a decade if not beyond. And hey, if there is a fault in one of the knives, you have bought from a reputable buyer, so they will do all they can to ensure you are happy with your purchase.

Kitchen Knives are a great present and a touching gift for those that like to be in the kitchen cooking. If you invest a bit of time and effort in researching which knives or knife set to get, and are comfortable with just spending a little bit more money, you will be amazed at how pleased you will be with finding the best kitchen knife possible!

The Reality Of Kitchen Knife Sets

The Reality Of Kitchen Knife Sets

I have talked extensively here on kitchen knife review about how knife sets and pre-packaged knife blocks are not really essential to your day to day kitchen life. In fact, I actually advocate going the other way, and buying your knives individually so as not to leave yourself with knife overload.

Personally, I get by with 4 kitchen knives - one large chef’s knife, one smaller chef’s knife, a utility knife and a paring knife. To be honest, I could quite happily subsist on just the three knives. Provided that you have access to a small utility or paring knife, and trusty everyday chef’s knife and a larger knife for more heavy duty slicing and dicing, you are not going to be lusting after any other knives.

When most people shop for and buy large kitchen knife sets, no matter what the price, they more often and not end up with a hefty bit of kitchen real estate taken up by a needless chunk of wood. Furthermore, the reality of this situation is far more washing up that anyone wants to deal with.

Nine out of 10 of us simply do not need a cleaver or a specialized carving knife; we can manage just fine on a small selection of kitchen knives. Remember that so much choice isn’t necessarily a good thing.

So remember, if you are in the market for some new kitchen knives, or thinking of buying a new set of knives, just think whether you really need 18 different knives. By buying fewer, not only do you get less clutter in the kitchen, but you also get better value for money and are able to buy more expensive kitchen knives.

What Website Has The Cheapest Kitchen Knives

What Website Has The Cheapest Kitchen Knives

I often get asked where to buy our beloved kitchen knives online. Given that I preach about how people need quality kitchen knives and that the inexpensive equivalents are a false economy, I was surprised to get a question about which website has the cheapest kitchen knives.

Now, in this instance I will assume that by cheapest, we mean to say which website sells good quality knives for the lowest prices!

The answer, readers, is always Amazon. They have the might to be able to give you cheaper than RRP prices, and have an excellent supply chain network that help save you costs.
