Kitchen Knife Blocks
Kitchen knife blocks are, put very simply, wooden/plastic/metal blocks that easily store away your kitchen knives so you can keep them stored safely and always on hand.
A lot of people prefer kitchen knife racks - usually magnetic - or there are also in drawer kitchen knife storage solutions, which are great too, but they don’t put your kitchen knives on display like the other types.
Benefits of using a Kitchen Knife Block
The most important benefit of using a kitchen knife block is that it stores your knives properly which helps to prolong their longevity. Too many people have stored their kitchen knives in drawers along with other metal implements, which gradually wears away and dulls the blades of your kitchen knives.
You can imagine, too, that it is pretty dangerous to just keep your kitchen knives floating around in the drawer with no protection - you just need to put your hand in without looking once to do yourself some serious damage.
How much should I spend on a Kitchen Knife Block?
I have always thought that it is better to spend your money on the kitchen knives themselves, as you will be using these for a more active purpose than what you store them in.
That said, however, you want to make sure that your kitchen knife block is sufficiently robust to take a few knocks, and has a heavy enough base to keep your knives up right and without danger of falling over.
I would personally not spend over $50 on a kitchen knife block (without the knives, that is!), as anything over that I could spend on getting a great little kitchen knife instead!
With kitchen knives or without?
Obviously there are quite a few knife blocks that you can buy which come pre-populated with kitchen knives themselves. If you are looking to buy a kitchen knife block such as this, then you will be paying quite a lot more than that to ensure you get yourself a good quality set.
I would really recommend against getting a cheaper, generic and unbranded kitchen knife block, because there is a very high chance that the kitchen knives will need replacing after a few months or a year, because they will be relatively low quality.
