Kitchen Knife Review

Best All Around Kitchen Knife

So you’re in the market for an all round (or, all around) kitchen knife, are you? Well, here are some tips to help your narrow your search criteria and hopefully aid you in selecting your best all purpose kitchen knife.

Choosing the best all round kitchen knife

  • Don’t be seduced by the high prices by brands such as Shun and Global and the top end Wusthof ranges - sure they are great knives, but you don’t want to be too scared to dice an onion for fear of damaging your most prized posession. Other brands (Henckles, Victorinox) and smaller knife forgers make great products with more reasonable price tags

  • It’s my personal view, but avoid all-metal kitchen knives - they are great to look at, but see how safe you feel with oily hands and nothing between the slippery handle and the very sharp blade. Tradition dictates wooden handles, but modern rubber can be a great alternative

  • Bigger is not always better - for an all purpose, all round kitchen knife you probably want to limit your search to blades under 10 inches, and more around the 6-8 inch mark. Anything bigger is too unwieldly for general purpose tasks

  • … but obviously make sure you get something big enough to do the job. Paring and vegetable knives are great for some jobs, but they are not all around kitchen knives

  • Again, don’t bust your bank account on it. Get a good chef’s knife that you can afford - you want to enjoy using it, and not feel resentful because you traded in your summer holiday for a kitchen knife
